July
Update From The President
Another month has passed; we now need to start
thinking about medication options.
The major flow has slowed now. This would be a good
time to remove and process surplus honey and store
equipment till the fall flow starts.
West Virginia Dept of Agriculture says one of our
options for medications is
Apiguard for the control of
Varroa mites; (please follow directions).
You can also use the shop
towel method to apply
menthol for the control of
Tracheal mites. We need
to think of preparation for winter; building our
bees up to a strong population.
I
have ask Wade Stiltner,
a bee inspector for
the WV Department of Agriculture, to join us and for
our next meeting and speak about fall management.

Field Day - June 13th
We had a great Field Day at the home of
Teresa Lonker. She and her fellow beekeeper
friend Gerri Simmons had a great place for a
field day; plenty of parking and the
breezeway made a great place for a meeting.
We discussed Queen installation, making
splits, types of bees and the pros and cons
of each. Some treatments were discussed for
Tracheal and Varroa mites and we discussed a
little about fall management.
The meeting changed to food and there was
plenty on hand; great meal! After lunch we
went to the hives. We discussed what needed
to be done with the hives marked Queens,
suggested adding more supers and we also
changed the bottom boards from solid to
screened. We talked about integrated pest
management, what medications and when to use
them.
There were sixteen members present.
The Kanawha Valley Beekeepers Association
would like to thank Teresa, her sister and
niece, Gerri Simmons and everyone who
brought food and helped with the field day |
We need helpers for the
Kanawha County Fair,
help at the information booth passing out hand outs and talking to people about the Kanawha Valley
Beekeepers Association. The Fair dates are September
10th thru 13th.
Come help tell everyone about the honey bee, its
importance as a pollinator for our food chain and
how we as beekeepers are helping.
