Next Meeting:  Our next meeting will be 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday April 12 2008 at the St. Albans Public Library, corner of 6th Avenue and 4th Street in Saint Albans, WV.   The program will be “Installing Package Bees and Introducing the New Queen” followed by a discussion of the process.  Visitors and new members are welcome.

2008 Dues:  Annual membership dues are $12.00 for a family membership.  Six dollars of this amount goes to the West Virginia Beekeepers Association and $6.00 remains in our local association.  To Join or Renew your membership with our Association send your check for $12.00 payable to Kanawha Valley Beekeepers Association to the treasurer, Larry Lipscomb, 138 Pinch Ridge Road, Elkview, WV 25071.

West Virginia Beekeepers Association:  It is important that we are members of the state organization because we can do much more as a larger group of beekeepers than we can do as individuals.  Each year members visit the legislature on Ag Day and deliver honey bears to each legislator and explain the value of honeybees and needs of beekeepers.

As a result of these efforts money was appropriated that provided for free corn syrup and sugar at reduced prices to beekeepers.  Registered beekeepers can also participate in a cost-share program of 3-pound packages of bees for $25.  These will be delivered in the spring.  The third benefit of the appropriation is free mite treatments (most likely Apigard) that will be distributed in August.

Heartland Apiculture Society:  This is something you should not miss!  It will be held this year at Marshall University on July 10, 11 and 12.  It is a great opportunity to learn beekeeping skills by choosing from 65 presentations and instructions in a live bee yard.  Leading beekeeping suppliers will also be there to show their wares.  It’s educational, enjoyable, inexpensive and close to home...  Check out details at http://www.heartlandbees.com for further information.

Kanawha Valley Beekeepers Website:  Have you looked at our website that Michele and Mickey Halleron have posted?  Take a look at http://kanawhavalleybeekeepers.com.  There are some helpful articles available.

Beekeeper of the Year:  If you would like to nominate someone for the WV Beekeeper of the Year, send the name and a list of accomplishments to Sharron Ball, Route 7 Box 542-C, Fairmont WV 26554.

Bee Magazines Subscriptions:  If you are a member of a beekeepers association both Bee Culture Magazine and American Bee Journal offer a discount on subscriptions.  Ask Gordon Mead for the discount subscription form.

Area State Bee Inspector:  If you need to have your bees inspected, contact Wade Stiltner on his cell phone at 550-0589.

WVBA Spring Meeting:  We hope you are planning to attend the spring meeting at the Jackson County Junior Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 19.  This will be hosted by the Jackson County Beekeepers who have planned interesting programs.  KVBA’s own Allen Leadmon will be one of the presenters with a program on candle making.

Future KVBA Meetings:  Mark your calendars for June 14th, August 9th, October 11th, and November 8th.
